Derek Curtis II was born in Washington, D.C. and was raised in and attended public schools in Washington, D.C., and Prince Georges County, Maryland. He graduated from Cardozo Senior High School. Curtis received an academic scholarship to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland University College in accounting and financial management. He received his license as a certified public accountant in 2013.

Curtis’s humble beginnings, growing up in a single-parent home with three siblings, is where he developed a heart for the community. His vision, determination, and passion for others led him to Peace Corps, where he volunteered to serve as an enterprise developer in a village in Northern Togo, West Africa. In the center of unimaginable poverty, Curtis helped build a community encouraging and teaching skills needed to create and sustain small businesses and equipping the Togolese to build a better future for themselves and their families. Upon returning to the United States, Curtis continued his community service as a volunteer for "Young Life" (a Christian-based organization that reaches out to inner-city youth to mentor and build values and principles).

Curtis’s impressive work history includes The National Academies, Deloitte Corporation, and his current employer, The International Association of Chiefs of Police, where he currently serves as the Assistant Director of Finance and Operations.

Curtis has been married to his lovely wife, Karen Curtis since 2011. They have two children, Carson and Cassidy. In their Glenarden home, God is first.
