The 3rd Glenarden HEAL City Event
The City of Glenarden held its third Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Event on October 26, 2019 at the James R. Cousins, Jr. Municipal Center Ballroom. Approximately 50 citizens and employees were in attendance. The HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign’s mission is to help communities by promoting a healthier lifestyle through programs that inspire nutritional values and activities that encourage physical health and movement. The recent HEAL City Event Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration was the second in a series of Healthy Food Cooking Demonstrations prepared and presented by Chef Matenziion (Chef Ten) D’Astrii.
The Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration menu consisted of Turkey Cassoulet, Fall Field Greens with Farro, Pumpkin, Cranberry and Maple Vinaigrette, and Homemade Apple sauce. Citizens were very attentive to Chef Ten’s presentation, asked the Chef nutritional and cooking-related questions, and tasted samples of the cooking demonstration menu recipes, which citizens loved so much, they ate seconds! The HEAL Event also involved games, prizes, and give-a-ways. Councilwoman Deborah Eason spearheads the HEAL City Events, with the assistance of Councilwoman Angela Ferguson, and support from the City of Glenarden Mayor and Council. Councilwoman Eason will be planning the next HEAL City Event Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration and Chair Yoga Massage in 2020! The 2nd Glenarden HEAL City Event
On July 13, 2019, Councilwoman Deborah Eason and Councilwoman Angela Ferguson hosted the City of Glenarden’s second HEAL City event! The Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration focused on the HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign to promote healthy eating and active living. Guest Chef Matenziion D’Astrii demonstrated several entrées for the event menu that included Maple Mustard Glazed Salmon, Garam Masala Spiced Sweet Potato with Kale Hash and a Fried Egg, and a Chocolate Chia Avocado Pudding. Chef D’Astrii explained the health benefits of each entrée and demonstrated how healthy foods can be easily prepared that are also very delicious. Guests were allowed to taste samples of each of the entrées and drink two types of healthier alternative refreshing waters: Aqua Fresca (Peach Puree and Water) and Rosemary, Lemon, and Lime Sparkling Water!
The Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration included a very interactive and informative Question and Answer (Q&A) session, which allowed participants to ask the Chef questions about food and nutrition. Guests received a special notebook, embossed with the City of Glenarden Seal, designed especially for the event, which allowed participants to write notes, questions and answers. The notebook also contained recipe cards for each of the event menu entrées and a “More About Superfoods” insert to provide additional information to help participants get started practicing a healthy eating routine at home.
Last but not least, Councilwoman Ferguson facilitated a nutritional game and the winners were allowed to select a special gift!
The City expresses much gratitude to HEAL City representative Sydney Daigle who supports all of the City’s HEAL events! The community was again very pleased with the Glenarden HEAL City event. Participant survey responses were very positive, indicating they would attend future Healthy Food Cooking Demonstration events!
